TRUE LOVE 2 [Chapter 9: The Past & Present]

I woke up in a warm bed, however the surroundings much different. I noticed the bedroom was very masculine, with signed sports memorabilia, photos of the High School football team and trophies. Nick had his arm wrapped around me as we cuddled in his bed. I woke him up by shifting, he kissed my shoulder and greeted me.

“Morning babe.” He smiled, stretching his arms
“Morning.” I smirked

I stood up, forgetting I slept naked, and I quickly grabbed my underwear and slipped them on.

“Don’t get dressed…I love your perfect ass.” He laughed

I gave him a smile, crawled on the bed and leaned down to kiss his lips.

“What a tease.” He said as I jumped back out of bed
“Let’s brush our teeth first and then I’ll give you a real kiss.” I said

I opened the door to find a young man, only a few years older than me standing there appearing as if he were about to knock. He looked at me up and down, noticing I was only in my underwear.

“Fuck…um…hello.” I said nervously
“Yo.” He said calmly and looked over at Nick, “Want coffee?”
“No thanks.” Nick said
“You?” he pointed at me
“Oh um…no thanks.” I said

He looked oddly familiar.

“Thanks, Brad.” Nick yelled out to him as he walked back towards the kitchen

Holy shit. I just remembered who he was. He was the server from the restaurant I had gone to with my parents, not once, but twice. The most recent when I had to relive my embarrassing moment.

“Your brother works at Guy’s Diner?” I whispered loudly
“He did. Just for a couple years. He works at a garage now.”
“I wonder if he recognized me.” I said in a low voice
“He remembers you.” Nick chuckled
“Wait…you know how he knows me?” I asked mortified
“Oh yeah.” He laughed
“Shut up.” I smiled
He got up out of bed as his morning wood greeted me. His naked body was perfection. There was an attraction towards his body hair, maybe because I never experienced being with someone like that before. But what I loved about his body hair was that he maintained it. He trimmed it, giving him that light peach fuzz look on his chest and legs. Fortunately his ass and back were hairless and he really manscaped his pubic area. He smacked my ass as he walked by me towards the hallway.

“Let’s take a shower baby.” He said walking into the bathroom

I followed him and closed the door behind us. I was hesitant because I didn’t want to have sex in his brother’s house and be obnoxiously loud. We brushed our teeth, luckily for me, Brad had spare new toothbrushes. We only made out after taking care of our dental hygiene, of course with some light fondling and oral suckage.

I felt an instant connection with Nick, and not because we had spontaneous sex on the beach, but because of what he said afterwards. He dreamed of making me happy. It showed me what his true intentions were. Could this be the start of something wonderful?

Another two weeks had passed, I had now been broke up with Cameron for a month and rebounded with Nick two weeks after that. That sounds horrible, but was it true? I didn’t want Nick to be a rebound. He really liked me and I really liked him. But maybe this was too soon, too fast? Maybe that was my problem, that I overthink things…or maybe that I don’t give myself enough time to be alone, or get to know someone? Stop it Joey. Just enjoy life. After a couple of dates, Nick asked me at the beach to be exclusive with him. I told him yes, as long as we take things slow still. I mean, why not? He did make me happy. The sex was amazing, he made me smile and I knew he wouldn’t mistreat me.

A few days after we made it official, I got a call from my mother.

“Hi, hun.”
“Hi mom.”
“I wanted to invite you and Cameron over for dinner this Saturday.”

Shit. My mom doesn’t know about Cameron and I. How do I say this?

“Mom…thanks, but maybe another time…things are a little strange right now.” I stumbled over my words
“Why? What’s going on?” she asked concerned
“Wait…is Dad going to be there?” I asked trying to change the subject
“Yes. Don’t worry, he’s going to be good.” She tried to comfort me
“I’m not sure if now is a good time…”
“Joey…talk to me.” She said firmly

I hesitated, but then I filled her in, “Cameron and I broke up.”
“Oh, sweetie…I’m sorry.” She said in a painful voice
“It’s fine mom…I’m fine.” I expressed
“Well, you have to come for sure then…spend time with your parents. I’ll make you some cookies.” She said

My mother was so cute. She always tried to make me feel better with baked goods.

“Mom…” I began
“Yes?”
“I met someone else.” I said flatly
“Oh you did? Well, that’s good!” she said excitingly
“Is it?” I asked
“Yes! Does he make you happy?” she asked
“He does.” I admitted
“Then bring him along…I want to meet this man that makes my son happy.”

I told Nick about the dinner and he was excited to meet my parents. I on the other hand was nervous as shit. The day had arrived and Nick drove us to my parents’ house. It had been a while since I was over for a visit. We drove down the long gravel path, through the tall pine trees and pulled up to the two story home with the wrap-around porch. We got out of Nick’s black escalade, which he admitted to only being able to afford it with the money he had made from working two jobs in Seattle and now saving much more money by living with his brother for free for the time being. He reached out for my hand and I nervously grabbed his as we walked up to the front door. Before we reached the center of the porch, my mother burst out of the door.

“Joey!” she squealed with her arms wide open and kissing me on the cheek
“Hi mom.” I smiled and hugged her tightly

I noticed my dad standing behind the screen door with a blank face. He slowly opened the door and walked out.

“Hi Dad.” I said releasing my mom
He held out his hand, waiting for me to shake it, “Joey.”
I reluctantly shook his hand.

“Mom, Dad, this is Nick…Nick Johnston.” I introduced him
“Where’s what’s his face?” my dad asked bewildered
“Joseph…I told you already, they broke up.” My mother whispered loudly

This was embarrassing. I looked at Nick who just smiled at me.

“Dad…Nick is my boyfriend. Cameron and I broke up about five weeks ago.” I said plainly
“How long you two been together?” he drilled
“…Three weeks.” I said giving him the stare of daggers
“A two week break…that’s my boy.” He said turning around huffing back into the house
“I can’t do this.” I said frustrated
“Stop it! Joseph…get back out here.” My mother snapped at my dad

He shuffled back outside standing in the doorway of the house.

“We hardly get to spend time together. I made us a nice dinner…we have a handsome new addition to the family and we are all going to behave ourselves.” She said calmly

Nobody responded except Nick.

“So…what’s for dinner?” he asked

We all sat around the dinner table and at first, quietly ate our dinner. My mother made an oven roasted chicken with all the trimmings including mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, biscuits, steamed vegetables and salad.

“This is delicious Mrs. Ramirez.” Nick said with a smile
“Thank you Nick and please just call me Marie.” She smiled back with a wink
“Reminds me of Thanksgiving.” Said Nick
“We’re eating chicken, not turkey.” My dad said under his breath
“Dad!” I said firmly
“Oh…I know. I just meant…that the presentation and the sides just remind me of Thanksgiving.” Nick clarified
“You eat chicken for Thanksgiving?” my dad asked sarcastically
“Joseph!” my mother snapped
“Please excuse my dad…he gets cranky around dinner time…or any time of the day.” I said
“So your name is Nick?” my dad began again
“Yes, sir…Nick Johnston.”
“Nick Johnston…weren’t you the kid that beat up my son and his ex at school?” my dad said biting into a biscuit

I was mortified. My mother had her mouth full and wasn’t able to stop my father from talking.

“Oh…um…” Nick began
“Dad! Please stop.” I said calmly
“Jesus Joey…don’t you date ugly guys?” my dad said again with sarcasm
“Oh…well thank you, sir.” Nick smiled
“That wasn’t a compliment.” My dad snarled staring directly at me
“Let’s go.” I said standing up and dropping my napkin on the table
“No…wait…please don’t go.” My mom said trying to stop us
“No, mom. Obviously this man still hasn’t grown up! Just because he’s fucking miserable with himself, doesn’t give him the right to make everyone around him miserable. You deserve better.” I told my mother

“Get out of my house!” my dad snapped, “you too, dick, rick, or whatever the fuck your name is.”
“Fuck you.” I snapped at him

I kissed my mother on the cheek and Nick and I walked out of the house. I wanted to cry, but I was so heated. Nick grabbed me before I could get in the car. He spun me around and hugged me tightly.
“I’m so sorry. You didn’t deserve to experience that.” I said in a shaky voice
“Stop…It’s not your fault.” He said rubbing my back

I felt his lips press against my forehead. I tilted my head back to look up at him. I felt a rogue tear dropping from my eyes and about to roll down my cheek. He gently lifted his hand and wiped it away with this finger. He then leaned in to kiss me.

Nick was a good man…and an even better boyfriend. It was that moment as we stood there…as he wiped the tear from my face…that I knew I was falling for him.

TRUE LOVE 2 [Chapter 8: Discovery]

My heart felt as if it were dragging behind me as I walked down street. I wasn’t paying attention to the direction I was walking, I just knew that I wanted to get as far away as possible? Should I go back to my parents? Should I ask Diane if she could let me stay in her son’s bedroom, the son I just broke up with? Did I just give up too easily or did I simply prolong the breaking point? I had no clothes, nowhere to go. I must have crossed at least three major streets without consciously thinking because I was in the center of town. Suddenly, a car horn perked me up out of my stasis. I looked to my left to see Larissa pulling up next to me.

“Get in.” she said

I simply stared at her, unsure if I should get in or continue to walk and think about what just happened.

“Get in the car please. You look like a hooker walking the streets like this.” She joked

I gave a pale smile and entered her car without saying a word.

“Want to talk about it?” she asked

I shook my head.

“You can stay with me. Okay?” she said placing her hand on mine which was resting on my leg

I turned to her as a tear rolled down my cheek. Her face surprised by my overwhelming emotion, she pulled over to the side of the road. As soon as she placed the car in park, she leaned over and hugged me. It was then that I broke down sobbing hysterically. She calmed me down by shushing me and repeatedly saying, “It’s okay. It will be okay.” We sat in her car, parked while I cried for at least five minutes straight. She held onto me the entire time. Larissa was an amazing friend, she was loyal and caring when it counted most. Just as I began to dry my eyes and collect myself, my pocket began to vibrate. I pulled out my phone to see Cameron’s face.

“Don’t answer it just yet. He realize how much pain he caused. He needs time to think about what he’s done.” She said

“I’m the one that broke up with him.” I said flatly

“I know.” She smiled

I looked at her confused.

“I know…because based on the observation I’ve been doing, Cameron hasn’t really been himself lately…and I could see the pain on your face, the questions and the disconnect.”

“You could?” I asked surprised

“You did the same thing that I would have done if I were in your shoes.” She admitted

“He’s not a bad person though. I just wish he was the person I fell in love with two years ago.” I told her

“You want my honest opinion?” she began, “Cameron was your first boyfriend, you need to experience life a little. You never got into the dating scene. Why don’t you see if there is anything else out there? It’s natural.”

“I can’t do that to him.” I said looking down shamefully

“What? You don’t think he’s dated others?” she said honestly

At that moment I remembered the card that fell out of Cameron’s pocket when I was unpacking when we had returned from Seattle. What if Cameron was lying? What if he hadn’t been as faithful as I thought? He obviously had more experience than I did. I couldn’t think about this right now. I just needed to unwind.

“I think I just need to take some Nyquil and sleep this off.” I suggested

“Are you sure?” Larissa asked

“Yes.” I said looking straight ahead

With that, we drove to Larissa’s apartment. She gave me the Nyquil and observed me while I took it. I’m not sure if that was her way of monitoring me to make sure I didn’t overdose on the medication or she was just being nosey. Within a few minutes, I was in a deep sleep. I had dreams and nightmares of the situation. They played over and over in my head, always with a different outcome, different argument.

Even though two weeks had gone by since the split from Cameron, I was unable to escape the dreams. The nightmares as well as the constant moaning of Larissa’s lady friends she had over didn’t help me sleep at all. It was a different girl every night of the week. She nicknamed them the day of the week, this evening it was Miss Thursday, a hot red-head with the body of a porn star. I got out of what I called my rent-a-bed, since it wasn’t mine to begin with, and headed towards the living room. I was very lucky to have Larissa and Phillip help me by going to Cameron’s to pick up my things. Larissa had mentioned that Cameron, although distraught by the situation, helped them collect my things. Every time they would see him whether it being at his apartment or at his mother’s house, he would always ask how I was doing. Natalie called me once, telling me that he almost seemed hurt by the fact that I never asked how he was doing. The first week away from Cameron was tough, but coming to an end of the second week wasn’t as hard. I had been keeping busy, hanging out with Larissa at the clubs, catching up on my favorite TV shows, going for midnight runs. A couple days ago, I got a text message from Cameron with a picture of Cloud laying on my side of our bed. It broke my heart. I needed to get myself out of this funk I was in. Maybe Larissa was right. I needed to get out and do things that I never got to before I settled with Cameron.

Larissa’s bedroom door opened, pulling me out of my thoughts. Miss Thursday walked out topless. She saw me, smiled and said hi. I smiled back trying to ignore her naked body, except she didn’t seem to care. She stepped in front of me, leaned over to grab her t-shirt which was on the ground next to where I was sitting.

“Sorry.” I said scooting over

“No problem.” She smiled at me, pulling her t-shirt over head

Larissa stood leaning against her bedroom door frame running her fingers through her hair, with only a t-shirt and underwear on. Miss Thursday walked up to her and kissed her on the lips.

“Bye.” Miss Thursday smiled walking towards the front door
“Taste you later, baby.” Larissa smirked as Miss Thursday closed the door behind her
“Gross.” I looked at Larissa with a distasteful smile
“Shut up…it tastes like chicken.”
“Oh my God. I’m gonna throw up.” I fake gagged

She smacked me hard on my arm.

“Ouch” I laughed
“What are you doing up?” she asked lighting a cigarette
“Probably heading for a run.” I said waving the smoke away from me
“At this time of the night?” she said exhaling in the opposite direction
“Yes…since you’re screaming red-head woke me up and now that you are trying to kill me.” I said choking on the tainted air
“Oh calm down…I only smoke one cigarette after sex.”
“Which is every fucking day.” I got up to put on my running shoes
“Well, I won’t wait up.” She said heading back to her bedroom

I walked out of the front door, seeing Miss Thursday getting into a cab and drive off in the general direction I take my running route. I usually run around the park and uptown area, but I figured, why not go a little further? Back to Boiler Bay. I knew this was the place where Nick usually went for swims, but I wasn’t sure what his regular schedule was like, so I wasn’t holding my breath. The fastest route to Boiler Bay was running past Cameron’s apartment, but I took a detour, running through a neighborhood

Within forty-five minutes, I arrived to Boiler Bay. The beach was empty, I didn’t see any sign of clothes or Nick. Maybe this was for the best. I took off my clothes, placed them high on the said under the pier and jumped into the water. I dunked my head under the water to wet my hair. The water was cool, but not freezing. I floated on my back for a while, staring up at the full moon and sky full of stars. Some puffy clouds loomed over me, as they glowed from the moonlight. I heard something in the distance, so I positioned myself to see what it was. I could see a figure jogging near the boardwalk of the beach. I squinted my eyes trying to make out who it was. Oh shit, they were coming towards the water. Maybe me floating like a dead body, wasn’t a good idea. The figured stood at the edge of the water and looked out in my direction. The person waved at me. It was Nick. He took off his clothes and jumped into the water, swimming out towards me.

“Hey.” He said smiling as he finally reached me
“Hey.” I smiled back
“Thought it was you out here. Surprised to see you here.” He confessed
“Why is that?” I asked
“I thought I scared you away.”

I smiled, “No, you didn’t.”
“That’s good.”

We floated near each other in silence for a couple of minutes.

“The water is nice today.” He began small talk
“It is.” I replied

A few seconds passed before we spoke again. We both faced towards open ocean, in order to prevent awkward staring.

“I’m sorry things didn’t work out with Cameron.” He said out of nowhere
“What?” I asked shocked, “How did you know?”
“Small town…” he began, “Plus, my brother was at the beach the day everything went down. I guess Phillip mentioned to his co-worker, he had to leave early, to help his friend Joey move out of his boyfriends apartment, his co-worker is friends with my brother and my brother told me.”

“I’m going to kill Phillip.” I said in a low voice, “but thanks.” I said
“How are you doing?” he asked politely
“Hanging in there. But honestly, not as bad as I thought I would be.” I confessed
“Well, I’m here if you ever want to talk. I know we have a complicated history, but…I want to prove to you, I’m a good person.” He said smiling at me.

His face was covered in droplets of ocean water, his eyes glistened in the moonlight.

“Thank you. I think the best thing for me to do, is to just…take it day by day and move forward.”
“That’s a good plan.” He said

The water was starting to get cold. We agreed to head back to the beach and dry off. We reached the beach, stepping out of the water completely naked. I forced myself to not look at Nick’s body. I began to walk towards my clothes sitting under the pier.

“Where are you going?” Nick asked
“My clothes are over here.” I pointed looking at his face only
“Did you bring a towel?”
“Shit…no.” I admitted
“Well, come over here, you can use mine.” He said as I realized I wasn’t looking at his face anymore.

Nick was pretty well endowed. I couldn’t help but widen my eyes at his girth. I walked over hunched like an old man, freezing. He picked up a large beach towel and wrapped it around himself.

“Is that the only towel you have?” I asked
“Yeah…come on in.” he said opening the towel like a cape

The towel was large enough for not only two, but three people. I huddled in under the towel as we sat on the sand side by side. He wrapped the towel around my shoulder, placing his arm around me. His cool body nestled against mine.

“You are freezing.” He said rubbing my arm
“Yeah.” I said chattering my teeth
“Smooth move, not bringing a towel.” He laughed
“Shut up.” I laughed
“Come closer.” He said pulling my body closer to his

I complied and felt his hand grab my waist to force me closer. I felt his eyes on me. I looked up at him. He was smiling.

“What?” I asked
“Nothing…you’re just…gorgeous.” He smiled
“Stop.” I chuckled
“I don’t want to stop…” he said. I locked onto his eyes and then his lips, “not anymore.”

I don’t know what happened, but his words warmed me up. His face grew larger as I realized we were leaning into each other. Our eyes closed and lips met. I felt his tongue enter my mouth and his soft lips massaging mine. Our mouths smacked with each kiss, but it was interrupted by a passing car.

“I’m sorry.” He said shaking his head

I looked up at him, knowing he truly wasn’t sorry.

“I’m not.” I confessed

His head quickly turned to me and smiled. It was like seeing a child excited for Christmas. Nick’s beauty gave me chills, his smile made me want him…his body made me crave him.

“Come on.” He said standing up naked and completely erect
“Where?” I asked standing up with the towel wrapped around me

He pulled me towards the underside of the pier. He threw the towel off me once we were underneath. He then pulled me towards him for a kiss. His hands running down my back and squeezing my ass. His erection was tucked between my legs, begging to enter me. My erection was up between our abs. We then began to crouch down onto the towel as we continued to kiss. I ran my hands down the side of his abdomen also grabbing hold of his firm ass. We came up for air, his forehead against mine, our noses touching, we panted.

“Fuck me.” I whispered

He lifted me upwards as he was in a sitting Indian position. He spit onto his hand and began to lubricate his penis. The head of his penis was throbbing against my ass cheek. He then spit onto his hand again and then lubricated my anus. This wasn’t the sexiest part of anal sex, but it was necessary to enhance the pleasure.

I kissed him again and then began to lower myself onto his erection. His thick penis entered me, I moaned loudly with every inch. He placed his hands under my ass for support and I wrapped my arms around the back of his neck. I began to ride him. Nick threw his head back in pleasure. I felt his throbbing penis slide in and out of me with every thrust. His hands gripped my ass, squeezing it occasionally. I began to ride him harder as his penis drove deeper inside me. My penis was rubbing against his beautiful abs, which gave me pleasure without having to stroke myself. We both moaned at the blissful experience. The gentle waves crashing on the beach, the seagulls flying over the ocean made this a perfect scene.

“Fuck.” Nick whispered into my mouth as we kissed
“Harder.” I whispered back, demanding him to take control

He leaned me onto my back, lifted my legs and wrapped them around his waist. He hovered over me using both arms and penetrated me. I grunted in pleasure and he moaned loudly. His thighs slapping against my ass aroused me even more. I stroked my erection to intensify the satisfaction. He eventually leaned back and positioned himself on his knees, lifting my legs over his shoulders. He held onto my ankles as he pounded me the hardest he’s pounded me yet.

“I’m gonna come.” He huffed thrusting faster into me
“Come baby.” I moaned, feeling close myself

He pulled out of me as his semen squirted against my ass. At the same, I came onto my stomach, moaning at the release.

Nick crawled over next to me and lied down on his side. My eyes were barely open, I was worn out from the amazing sex we just had. He placed his left hand on the ride side of my face, turning my head towards him. He leaned in and kissed me, gently slipping his tongue in my mouth. His beautiful green eyes fixed onto my eyes. I smiled at him.

“I’ve dreamed of this moment.” He smiled at me

I laughed, “Of fucking me on the beach?”

He gave out a chuckle and simply responded, “No…of making you happy.”

My laughter stopped as I looked back into his eyes. The sincerity of his answer melted my heart. I leaned in to kiss him again, but this time, with true passion. He lied in the sand holding onto each other for a while before it got too late. We eventually got dressed and walked up the boardwalk. Instead of letting go of my hand, he gently tugged me in the direction of where he had jogged from.

“What?” I asked
“Come with me.” He smiled his beautiful smile
“Nick.” I smiled back at him
“Please.” He pulled me in for a kiss
“Okay.” I laughed

We walked back to his brother’s place, hand in hand.

TRUE LOVE 2 [Chapter 7: Breaking Point]

As I sat in our lonely apartment, I began to assess the past few months of my relationship with Cameron. There was no doubt that I loved Cameron, but things were not as they were when we first met. We always had disagreements and eventually made up with sex. As much as I enjoy having sex with Cameron, it wasn’t fixing the issue at hand. Were we drifting apart? Was our love story coming to an end? We promised each other on the hill that we would be together…forever. The fact that I was even contemplating this had to be a sign that we needed to have a serious talk.

Just as I was thinking about it, Cameron walked in the front door without a word. He threw his keys on the counter, hung up his leather jacket in the coat closet and sat on the stool at the breakfast bar. He hunched over the counter top with both elbows on it, resting his head on the palm of his hands. I walked over slowly to him and gently ran my hand up his back to the back of his neck.

“Cam.” I said in a low tone
“Yeah?” he said softly
“I’m sorry.” I genuinely said
“Me too.” He looked up at me

The problem with me is that I couldn’t stay mad at him. He was my everything. I wanted to be his everything as well. He spun on his stool now facing me, opened his legs to pull me in closer. His tight embrace against his firm body made me melt.

“I hate fighting.” He confessed
“So do I.” I agreed

We held each other for a few minutes without any further words. Eventually we headed up to our bedroom and went to sleep. It was the first time we didn’t have sex after an argument.

The sound of the waves crashing and seals barking woke me from my deep sleep. Through my closed eyes I could see the brightness of the sun shining through our bedroom windows. I stretched out my left arm, thinking I would feel Cameron there, but he wasn’t. I opened my eyes and cocked my head towards his side of the bed. On his pillow was a red rose with a note. I sat up and picked up the note; it read – My sweetest Joey…meet me at the beach at noon. Forever yours, Cameron. Butterflies erupted within me. It was moments like this that made me happy to be with him.  Perhaps I was jumping ahead last night and overthinking things. We were just fine, these are issues that every couple has. Wait a minute. Noon? What time was it? As I rubbed my eyes to get a clear view of the clock, I noticed it was 10:30am. I had to get ready. Cloud stretched at the foot of our bed as he covered his eyes with his tiny paws from the beaming sunlight coming into our room. I kissed his fluffy head, grabbed some clothes and headed for the shower.

As noon drew near, I grabbed my beach tote with extra clothes, a towel, sunblock and of course my rose. I left my apartment and walked the twenty to thirty minute walk to the beach. Although, our apartment was beach front, I knew where Cameron had meant. He wanted us to meet near Cherry Blossom Cliff. As I turned the street corner towards the direction of the cliff, I felt a breeze blow past me. A beautiful blue butterfly rode the current, missing my face by inches. I had never seen such a bright blue butterfly before. The butterfly flew up the side of the cliff towards the cherry blossom tree where I lost sight of it. The memory of Cameron and I at the top of the cliff making our wish came rushing back to me. It was a moment when I knew that I had feelings for Cameron.

I continued my trek to the beach seeing in the distance Cameron along with our friends on a beach blanket. I was able to get close enough to greet them from a distance before I joined them on the blanket. I placed my things down next to Cameron, took off my shirt and sat down next to him. Phillip, Natalie and Larissa continued to talk while I leaned in to kiss my boyfriend.

“Hi.” He smiled
“Hi.” I smiled back only inches from his face
“I see you got my message.” He laughed
“Duh.” I said pulling the rose out of the bag.
“I love you.” He whispered in my ear
“You better.” I joked kissing him again

“Go get a room, you bag of dicks.” Larissa snapped at us as she sipped from her wine glass
“Did you bring that wine glass from your place?” I laughed
“Of course she did.” Natalie said embarrassed
“Hey…if I’m going to get drunk at the beach, I’m doing it with class.” She laughed
“At least it’s a warm day. I’ve wanted to get in the water.” Phillip said
“Me too, but I can’t now.” Cameron said
“Oh that’s right! You’re new tattoo will burn in the salt water.” Natalie said

I tried to ignore the tattoo, even though it was hard to miss with his shirt off. I didn’t want this to become an issue while we were with friends. I quickly changed the subject.

“Did you guys see that new building near the park? I wonder what it is?” I said uncaring
“Oh, that’s going to be an enclosed garden filled with exotic butterflies.” Natalie said with excitement
“Really?” I asked curiously
“Yeah. It opens in a couple of weeks.”
“I wonder if the butterfly I saw just now was from there then.”
“Really? Did it look exotic?” Natalie’s eyes lit up
“Actually, it did. It was bright blue.”
“Phillip, we need to go!” Natalie said

Of course we all knew, Natalie loved butterflies and would give anything to be a butterfly if she could.

“Hey, did you guys hear that Nick is back in town?” Larissa said staring directly at me
“Fan-fucking-tastic.” Cameron smirked
“I just hope he doesn’t rally up all his douchey friends again and start shit.” Phillip said firmly
“Ditto.” I interjected

“I wonder what made him come back to Depoe Bay.” Natalie thought out loud
“Maybe he got expelled from Seattle too.” Larissa joked as we laughed

“It’s getting hot.” Cameron said
“Want me to rub some sunscreen on you?” I asked
“Yeah babe, please.” He said turning his back towards me

His hideous tattoo was looking right at me and I knew I had made face of distaste.

“Why didn’t you get a matching tattoo, Joey?” Phillip asked

My eyes darted directly at Phillip, giving him the death stare. I caught Natalie shaking her head as if to sign to him, “Nope. Just don’t.”

“Because he thought it was ugly and immature.” Cameron answered

Holy fuck, here we go.

“That’s not what I…” I began
“Yes, you did say that.” Cameron interrupted me
“Cameron, I just wish we had talked about it before you decided to go and do this. We could have come up with something together, that we both loved.” I clarified
“This is a symbol of my love for you.”
“Babe. There are other ways we can symbolize our love for each other.” I said
“Do you not have faith in us anymore?” he snapped
“What?” I asked confused and embarrassed at the fact that we were arguing in front of our friends
“I get it…you don’t feel confident in us…” he said
“Why would I not feel confident, Cameron?” I snapped back at him
“I don’t know…maybe it’s because you’re money hungry and hate that I don’t make enough money!” he snapped at me

A lump grew in my throat. Is that what Cameron really thought of me? Some snob that is only looking to be with someone who spends money on me? My eyes filled with water. I held back the tears as I got up, grabbed my bag and threw the rose in the sand. I stormed off towards the street.

“Cameron!” I heard Natalie snap

As I walked down the street passing the cliff, a stream of tears ran down my face. I had never been so insulted. I don’t remember how long it took me to get home, but it only felt like five minutes. I was so angry that time had no meaning. I burst through the front door of my apartment dropping the tote bag near the coat closet. I sat down on the couch trying to focus on how to handle the situation. I knew this wasn’t over. I heard the small jingle of a bell. I looked over my shoulder to see Cloud trotting down the stairs towards me. He gave out a small squeak of a cry and jumped into my lap. His loud purr gave me a moment of peace as I smiled at him. Moments passed and the front door opened. My smile and peace shattered.

“Joey.” Cameron said walking towards me.

I placed Cloud on the ground and stood up facing him.

“Cameron. I don’t want to do this. Just drop it.” I said calmly
“I can’t drop it. Do you truly love me?” he asked

I could feel the anger growing in me. I clenched my teeth and turned away walking towards the sliding doors of our balcony.

“Well?” He asked again
“No.” I said
“What?!” he asked shocked
“No, because as you said at the beach in front of our fucking friends…I only love money!” I yelled
“I was angry.” He admitted
“Well I’m fucking pissed now. How dare you say that about me!”
“Let’s try to resolve this…”
“No! I’m done.” I snapped
“What?”
“I can’t…” I said
“What do you mean?” he asked in a low voice
“Cameron…I just…” I looked into his eyes which were wide and full of fear, “I can’t do this anymore.”

“No…please don’t.” he pleaded
“We fight about nonsense. Almost every day.”
“That’s normal.” He said
“No it isn’t. We argue about money, about tattoos, we try to make it up with sex…”
“I’ll be better…I promise.” He begged taking a step towards me

I put out my hand, suggesting he stop as I took a step back.

“We’ve lost our connection. Maybe we need time apart.” I said honestly
“No…Joey…don’t.” he began to cry
“I’m sorry, Cameron.” I said

I kissed Cloud as a tear ran down my face. I grabbed my keys, my phone and the tote bag near the door. I turned around to see Cameron still facing the direction of the balcony, sobbing.

“Maybe this is for the best.” I said fighting back tears once again

With that, I opened the door and walked out.
