After a five hour drive we
finally arrived home. Our first stop, Larissa’s apartment, which she shared
with another friend of hers. Then we headed to Phillip’s house; actually it’s
his older brother’s house to which he rented a room from. Finally he dropped
off Natalie at her mother’s house. She kissed me on the cheek and waved
goodnight to us. The on and off conversation from Seattle was the surprise run in
of seeing Nick dancing at a gay club. We each had a negative history with Nick
and we were glad to leave him behind as a distant memory in Seattle. Cameron
pulled up to our apartment that over looked the cove. We lived on the third
level which had a two story space with a loft. The ocean side of the building
was glass which offered an amazing view and tons of natural light. The first
floor contained a living area with a kitchen/dining area. The floor plan was
completely open. Near the front door was a small powder room. The second floor
consisted of a guest bedroom, a laundry room, guest bathroom and master suite
with a walk in closet. We had been living there for a little over a year now. I
dragged the luggage upstairs to our bedroom while Cameron stayed downstairs to go
over the monthly bills. I let him handle all of the account managing, he seemed
to enjoy organizing all of that stuff anyways, he would just tell me what the
amount owed is and we would split it 50/50. Cameron wanted to open a joint bank
account and I wasn’t really ready for that. I began unpacking our things when I
noticed something fall out of Cameron’s pocket. I looked down to find a
business card for an all-male call service. I starred hard at the card which
pictured a nude guy with a phone number. It read, Phone Sex, Companions and One Night-ers. My heart began to pound.
Blood rushed to my face, causing it to feel hot. I dropped Cameron’s pants and
began to walk out of the room, my eyes still on the card. I walked to the
landing of the stairs and looked down to where Cameron was sitting on the couch
with his laptop. He looked up at me.
“What is it babe?” he asked
I didn’t answer, for fear of
losing it, crying, yelling. I just stared blankly at him.
“Joey?” he asked
“What is this?” I asked facing
the card towards him
He squinted his eyes trying to
see what I was holding. He finally caught focus and his eyes widened. He put
the laptop on the coffee table and stood up quickly walking towards the stairs.
“DON’T!” I shouted with ferocity
“Baby, it’s not what you think…”
he pleaded
“You disgust me.” I said
beginning to walk backwards towards the room
He followed me finally reaching
the top of the stairs.
“Joey…do you really think I would
be that stupid to do this to you? You know how crazy I am about you.”
“Then why the fuck was this in
your pocket?” I asked stopping in the middle of the hall
“Do you remember what Nick said
while we were talking to him outside? Why he was doing what he was doing?”
I didn’t respond or move.
“Well, he was dancing because it
was bringing in money. It got me thinking…” be continued
“To hire a prostitute?” I snapped
“No! To possibly try being a
dancer or maybe even do phone sex for extra cash.”
My heart fell. Phone sex? He was
actually willing to do phone sex for money?
“I don’t believe you.” I said
“I’m being completely honest. I
saw these cards at the club and I picked one up. I was going to talk to you
about it tomorrow, I swear. It’s not like I would be cheating because I would
be faking it, nobody would know it’s me and I would probably be watching TV or
doing laundry while pretending to get off. Its easy money!” he tried to justify
“Let me ask you then…would you be
okay if I were doing this?” I said throwing the card at him
He looked down at the card as it
landed by his foot. He looked up at me.
“No.” he shook his head
“Exactly.” I said walking into
the room and slamming the door
I was furious. I sat on the bed contemplating
leaving for the night. Cameron walked in silently. He sat on the end of the
bed, his face full of fear.
“Please. Don’t be angry. It was a
stupid idea. I don’t know what I was thinking.” He said
“If I ever catch you doing
anything remotely close to that, I will leave you.” I said in a stern voice
“I know you will. You don’t
deserve that.”
“I love you.” I said in a low
voice, trying to make him understand how it made me feel, “I don’t want anyone
to experience what I do with you in private, whether it’s real or not.” I said
“You’re right. It’s special and
should be kept sacred.” He agreed
Cameron stood up and walked
towards me. He reached out waiting for my hand. I lifted my right hand and
placed it in his as he pulled me up and wrapped my arms around him. He latched
tightly onto me and kissed me.
“I’m sorry.” He said looking at
me into my eyes
“I know you are.” I said combing
my fingers through his hair
“I’m just so stressed out. We’re
barely making it. I mean this is probably the last trip we’ll have in a long
time.” Cameron confessed
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll see
if I can pick up extra shifts at work.” I told him
“I don’t want you to bare all the
responsibility, I’ll try to find something here in town. Maybe I can work at
the grocery store again.” He said with a face of distaste
“Maybe we can cut back on some unnecessary
spending.” I suggested
“We can try.”
“If that doesn’t work, we can
always move into a smaller apartment further in the center of town.” I
mentioned
“No…I don’t want to lose this
place. It’s perfect for us.” He said looking out of the window into the
darkness. The moonlight was shining down on the ocean surface causing a
reflective light show on our bedroom walls.
“Let’s not stress about that
right now. Let’s just get some rest.” I suggested as we moved the half empty
luggage onto the ground. We took off our clothes, turned off the lights and
fell asleep in each other’s arms.
The
sound of the ocean waves crashing at the shore woke me up. I moved my feet
around under the sheets, feeling for Cameron. He wasn’t there. I sat up rubbing
my eyes and looked around the room. He had finished unpacking the luggage,
which means he must have gotten up extra early. The clock beeped as it reached
10:00am. I stepped out of bed as the white sheet slipped off my naked body. I
stretched in front of the floor to ceiling window overlooking the cove. I walked
to the dresser to pull out a pair of trunks. The first thing I saw was a small
note. The note read, Good morning baby.
Come downstairs for a surprise. – Your boyfriend. A smile overtook my face
as I slipped on the trunks and a white tank top. I walked down the hall to the
stairs. I looked over and noticed Cameron standing by the balcony door holding
his hands behind his back.
“Good morning my baby.” He said
with a cheesy grin
“Good morning.” I smiled, “Are
you the surprise?”
“Just come down.” He said
I followed his orders and finally
came face to face with him.
“You and I have such an amazing
relationship and I’ve always felt that we have so much love between us.”
Cameron said
“I agree.”
“Shouldn’t we share our love?” he
suggested
“What do you mean?”
At that moment he brought his
hands around in front of him. In his left hand was a small white kitten. It
meowed as it looked at me with its blue eyes.
“Oh my goodness.” I said in a
loud whisper sticking out my bottom lip
“Meet our new baby.” Cameron said
“He is so cute. Or she?” I asked
“It’s a boy. What do you think?”
“He’s so precious. I would be so
excited if I wasn’t allergic.” I looked at Cameron
“What?!” Cameron jumped back
“I’m kidding.” I laughed
“Oh.” He chuckled mixed with a
sigh of relief
I grabbed the white bundle from
his hands and held him to my face. He squeaked a tiny meow and my heart melted.
“He is so cute. What’s his name?”
I asked
“That’s up to you.” Cameron said
standing next to me looking into the kitten’s eyes
“What does he look like to you?”
“I’m not sure. Sugar? Snowball?
Mr. Whiskers?” Cameron laughed
“No.” I grunted, “How about…Peanut?”
I suggested
“Peanut?” Cameron chuckled,
“Maybe we should think a little harder.”
“I got it. Cloud.” I laughed
Cameron didn’t respond.
“What?” I asked
“That’s actually not bad.”
“I was kidding.”
“No, that’s pretty unique. He
does look like a little cloud.” He said petting the now purring kitten
“Cloud it is.” I said kissing his
tiny head, “Thank you. I love him.” I said carrying him in my arms
“I’m glad. He seems to really
like you.” Cameron said kissing me on my cheek
“Isn’t this kind of another added
expense though?” I asked
“Not too much. Besides, you can’t
put a price on family.” He said
“Go explore your new home Cloud.”
I said putting the tiny kitten on the ground
